Child Speech & Language FAQs

Speech pathologists assess, diagnose, and treat disorders of communication. Speech pathologists work with clients all across the lifespan, from babies to the elderly. At Blast Off! Speech and Language, we love kids and work with children aged from 2-12.

‘Speech’ refers to the physical production of speech sounds. A child experiencing speech difficulties may speak with a lisp or swap sounds incorrectly e.g. say ‘ta’ instead of ‘car’.

‘Language’ refers to our knowledge of words, what they mean and how we combine them to communicate. A child experiencing language difficulties may have difficulty understanding instructions, may jumble up words in their sentences, or may make grammatical errors such as saying ‘mouses’ instead of ‘mice’.

You do not need a referral to see a speech pathologist.

Prior to assessing your child, we will discuss your concerns and goals for seeking support. Parental support and involvement is integral to the success of any speech pathology intervention, so it’s important that we are on the same page from the start.

In order to obtain the most accurate results from a speech and language assessment, your child needs to be comfortable and we have found that this is achieved the quickest through play without pressure. Building a strong rapport with your child is incredibly important to us as it lays a solid foundation for therapy.

As a mobile service provider, we can see you wherever is most convenient. Most families opt for appointments at their child’s school or daycare, but we can also see you at your home if that is a better option for your family.

This will vary according to the service we are providing (i.e. speech sound assessment vs. literacy assessment) and the time we spend with you. Please contact us for a personalised quote.

You may be entitled to a rebate through Medicare but will need to speak to your doctor for a referral. Your private health provider may also offer rebates depending on your level of cover.

Blast Off! Speech and Language is able to provide services to NDIS clients who are self-managed or plan-managed.

We are always happy to discuss your concerns, however large or small they may be. Otherwise you may find the following fact sheets helpful:
